Hazelnuts along with macadamias, walnuts, almonds and pistachios, cajole cancer cell death
Macadamias, hazelnuts, walnuts, almonds and pistachios – while delicious for snacking, these nuts can also pump the brakes on colon cancer cell growth in vitro.
Once fermented in the digestive system, the fibre these nuts contain contributes to the production of butyrate, which promotes the health of the intestinal mucosa and exerts chemo protective effects.
Additionally, the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as catalase and superoxide dismutase, were increased in nut treated samples, reducing the levels of cancer-promoting reactive oxygen species.
The nuts also significantly inhibited the growth of the colon adenoma cells and increased apoptosis. When it comes to chemoprevention, the nuttier the better.
